Problem Solved! Solution is quit simple (I installed Windows 7 on a Dell latitude D505).

1. Download the latest Intel Extreme Graphics 855 GM from Dell.com at
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats?DriverId=X5YDH&FileId=2731091111 and unzip it.

2. Go to the unzipped driver folder, right click the Setup.exe file and select Properties.

3. Select Compatibility Tab and choose "Windows XP SP3 as compatibility mode.

4. Apply changes, run the setup.exe file - ignore all Windows 7 messages - restart the computer and that is - you have a higher screen resolution.
