Windows 7 and the Intel 855GM Video Driver "Solution"

I’ve been playing about with Windows 7 in a VM for a while now in a VM, but now the beta is out I wanted to install it on a physical machine, I’m not ready yet to upgrade my main laptop to Windows 7 (although I have a cunning plan to p2v my Vista install and convert to a VHD so I can dual-boot that way which is a neat trick)
I have a Dell Inspiron 510m laptop that I use for testing things (I used it for my Patespin series) that I wanted to install Windows 7 on, it still gives pretty good performance and has 2Gb RAM – the installation itself went smoothly and quickly – less than 45mins from format to finished 1st boot, but it doesn’t detect the wireless or video card.
In my experience this isn’t that unusual for a Dell, although video did surprise me as Vista had a default driver for the Intel 855GM on-board video that worked well, there is no built-in driver in Windows 7 it would seem.
So, a bit of a problem – I’m stuck with 640×480 VGA mode which isn’t much use.
I tried several ways to hack the Vista version of the driver into my installation, all without success – it always defaulted back to the default VGA drivers, some discussion here if you are interested
In the end I came across a post suggesting that I use an application called DriverMax – this is capable of exporting and importing installed drivers, I’d not tried it before but decided to give it a go, I know Vista had a working 855GM driver so the plan was to export it from there, and import it into a Windows 7 installation as I was unsure of how to extract it from the Vista installation media.
This necessitated a format and reinstall of the Dell 510m with Vista, which was painless enough as I had an auto-install DVD that I’d previously built
Once Vista was installed there was a working video driver running – I used DriverMax to export the working driver from the running OS – no source or driver CD required via a couple of clicks in the UI to a .zip file on a USB drive.
I then formatted and reinstalled Windows 7 again and on the laptop and installed DriverMax again.
then I simply imported the driver from the .zip file
Note – it knows the driver I saved was a default Windows driver
Summary screen – important to note it can install unsigned drivers if required
After a reboot the Windows 7 installation is running with a working (full-res) video driver.
I did find one slight problem with DriverMax that I had to work-around, with the default VGA video driver the buttons on the dialog boxes were inaccessible and I couldn’t resize or hot-key around it to progress, so in the end I had to do the process via remote desktop to the Win7 machine from another machine on my network over a wired LAN connection!
It’s not an ideal solution as you have to have a working Vista installation to extract the driver from and is probably totally unsupported, this is essentially Windows 7 running a Vista video driver – but it’s a beta anyway, hopefully MS or Intel will ship an 855GM driver again when Windows 7 goes RTM.
My initial impressions are that Windows 7 seems a lot more responsive than Vista, although to be fair it’s a vanilla installation thus-far. I have high-hopes for the beta, by my reckoning the change in the code-base isn’t as fundamental as it was between XP and Vista so it’s more focused on incremental features and performance improvements. I ran beta copies of Vista on my main work machine from Beta 1 through to RTM without too many problems, maybe I’ll be confident enough to do that again this time around – the VHD booting feature is certainly compelling for what I do.

I have the same problem, I have an ibm x40 notebook. It was working on xp, but I upgraded it to 7. It works ok, but I can’t do anything graphics related. I installed vista and exported the drivers, then I tried using DriverMAX to put them on 7, but all i get is a blue screen.
Restart CPU go to set-up (f2) and change bios from 1 to 8 will fix prob. got it from another guy but it worked for me

Sorry I would assume I’d be breaking lots of licence agreements if I were to post Microsoft’s driver code myself.
Redistribution of driver software is not something Microsoft or Intel tend to concern themselves with. If you don’t feel comfortable posting it yourself, I would be happy to host it for you.
(I admit, though, that I have selfish motives. I skipped from WinXP to Win7, with no Vista in the middle, meaning I can’t take advantage of your DriverMax solution myself.)

You need to go to the device manager and find the video controller and update the driver with the files from the zipped archive.

Extracting and installing with DriverMax works fine, and normal desktop use is as well (on my Panasonic CF-T2 Toughbook), but the machine completely freezes when it comes to more demaning tasks, such as playing DivX movies, or even just assessing the Windows performance index.

Not entirely unexpected I guess, it’s a bit of unsupported hackery – normal desktop/web use is ok as far as I can tell, mine hangs on “assessing Windows Media Decoding performance” – required a hard reboot.
So, use with caution and understand what you are doing – this is all pre-release stuff not production quality – hopefully MS or Intel will address the lack of official Win7 855GM drivers soon

Word is MS will NOT offer support. It’s actually down to Intel, who haven’t supplied drivers for Vista either. What we got in Vista are just the XP drivers, and we were just lucky that it works. The guys with the 910/915 chipset are in the same boat.
Of course it’s not in Intel’s interest to provide software to keeep 6 year old hardware up and running. They want to sell new hardware!
So. Back to default drivers, I guess. And lose all D3D functionality (goodbye Aurora screensaver), good bye ‘Sleep’.

What about performance assessment? Ever run it? It didn’t hang?
I downloaded a DivX trailer this morning (~2mins long) and tried playing with WMP – it hung!
I then tried VLC media player and it played all the way through.
Is that enough of a test or should I try and find a 700Mb movie DixV and try that out as well?
could you share for intel 915GM too, so I can use windows 7 properly…..>_<
Sorry, I don’t have one of those or any way of giving you a driver – if you follow the process in this post using Vista and DriverMax you’ll be able to extract the driver for yourself – but just bear in mind this isn’t necessarily a stable configuration, and it’s definitley not supported.
Hi. i am using a Dell Latitude D505. It has Intel Extreme Graphics 2 (i855GM/GME). i have used the XDDM drivers for Windows Vista/7. i like Win7 but it does have a poor implementation of XDDM drivers.
I also notice that if i try to play a video, whether it be WMP12 Beta, or WinAMP, the video hangs and my computer is unresponsive. If i try to make my TV my primary device, system hangs, but extended monitor output works fine. If anyone has a workaround, or solution to this please share it.
Also, does anyone know why VLC player (their latest version) can not seem to go full screen on my TV (Display #2 for me)? i can move the window there and maximize it on that screen but the fullscreen mode jumps to the primary, or laptop, screen? Thanks!
I have a D505 with xp pro, and then I put on vista. I tried to put 7 on with both of them and tried all the things I found online to fix it. I finally read somewhere online, to change the video in bios, from 1 to 8 mb. after I did that, 7 installed like anything else, everything works great. Maybe it was just my situation, but, if this helps out, then great.

If you play with Hardvare Acceleration of your video adapter(right-click on the desktop, then: Screen Resolution-Advanced Settings-Troubleshoot-Change Settings).
My system wit GM855 graphics stopped freezing on the seccond position from the left to right (2 steps above “None”). There is no more freezing whatsoever, but the video quality is not that great.

Hi guys,
You can play with Hardvare Acceleration of your video adapter (right-click on the desktop, then: Screen Resolution-Advanced Settings-Troubleshoot-Change Settings). If you slide the button on the slidebar to the second position from he left that sais “Disable all DirectDraw and 3D Accelerations…” or disable completely hardware acceleration (position None to the left), the freezing when you play video will stop. Pay attention to the text at the bottom of the Display Adapter Troubleshooter window, text changes when you slide the button! The video quality will not be that great, but at least you will have a stable system and you will be able to play most of the stuff.

I have a Dell 700m with the 855gm intel chipset and I’m trying to install W7.
I tried using the driver provided by justen above and used drivemax to install it. However, on the reset I get the blue screen and have to restore to last known good startup.
Any idea how to resolve this issue? All I want is the sleep function when I shut my laptop, shutting down and restarting is a pain. Please holla back.

No, you need a WDDM driver for that and there will be no WDDM drivers for Intel 855/955GM chipsets
hmmm.. was so impressed with w7 on my desktop, I decided to put it on my D400 too. And.. wound up here. Yes, the posted driver “works”, but honestly, it’s crippled! Question: why bother if the media isn’t working right? I’m going back to Suse 11.1, 855gm fully supported. If you haven’t tried it, get it. It’s very good.
To be honest, it’s an un-supported driver from an old OS running on a beta version of a new OS; I’m not supprised there are issues.
Guess you need to accept it’s pre-release code rather than a finished product, lack of driver support for the Intel 855gm chipset is the key issue.
Help! I posted a comment above and nobody addressed it. Again, I have a Dell 700m that uses the 855gm vid card. I can’t get it to work. I install justen’s vista driver for 855gm using drivemax and it won’t restart without blue screen.

You can get “official”/proper feedback from Microsoft via the TechNet beta forums, and I’m sure they’d appreciate your feedback.
The driver is from an old OS and we are essentially hacking/bodging it onto a newer, and still beta version of the OS so I would expect issues, as said several times – lack of full support for the intel 855gm chipset in Win7 is the core problem and at present it looks likley they MS/Intel will not address this issue, would gladly be corrected though – anyone?
Maybe if enough people use the “Send Feedback” icon on the Desktop and ask MS for 855GM drivers they might come up with the goods. Gotta be worth trying.
I’ve also sent feedback about the lack of speedstep support for the Pentium M cpu in my laptop (Dell Latitude D400).
It isn’t necessary to export your Vista driver in order to import it to W7. Just install Driver Max to W7 as I have on 5 different machines, then run the Update Drivers function (which is good in most cases) and it will provide the driver that way.
Thanks for the tip on how to modify acceleration to keep WMP from hanging, tho I’m not sure the quality is any better than without the driver where I only have two resolution choices.
Has anyone tried a different player like Quicktime or Real? I have been puzzlin this for a week now waiting for Google to catch up with it, and sure enough you did. Thanks.
Greg, with the standard VGA driver there is no hardware acceleration. There is no difference in video clips quality with VGA driver and 855GM driver without acceleration. The only nice video picture I have got is whith enabled hardware acceleration – only VLC player works in this case. Did anybody else find another player working with hardware acceleration on?
Just tried it with the Dell 700m….nope. No good. I am getting tired of the fuzzy letters with the stock driver….arrrggghhh. However..Win7 runs like a champ on the laptop aside from the video display….
to me WMP with the 3rd-from-left acceleration setting with the vista intel 855gv driver is the best choice so far. quicktime stalls when u enlarge it at all, while VCA washes out compared to WMP which color remains richer even with the reduced acceleration.
has anyone heard of modded drivers for this, or know how to experiment with them?

Has anyone gotten the video to work with Dell 700m? Hilflyer what’d u use drivermax? I just want the sleep function to work, don’t really care as much about increasing rez. Kinda sucks, b/c windows 7 runs pretty well on this old dell, but I have to shut it down everytime, b/c it won’t got to standby (gray’d out)

I’ve installed 7 in my Acer Extensa 2900 with 855GME chipset. Imported Vista XDDM driver. Every Windows starts it always ended with a blue screen.
I must edit the INF file to remove the problematic DLL file, and now it works fine. You can play video without any problems.
PS: Try to get your Windows Vista VGA driver, usually with some tricks it can works.
What DLL did you remove from the inf file?

You must edit the INF file manually, and remove the problematic DLL showed at the bluescreen. Coz I’ve lost the original INF file đź¦
But, there only 2 DLL files exist in the driver folder, so a try and error is not too painful 🙂
(Note: I’ve used DriverMax to extract the 855GME driver, so it’s not difficult to find the VGA driver, depends on your driver output folder.)
There are four DLLs:
ialmrnt5.dll, ialmdnt5.dll, ialmdev5.dll, and ialmdd5.dll.
The Blue screen says it has a problem with Ialmnt5.sys.
I tried modifying the inf file by adding a ; in front of each line containing one of the dlls. I tried all four alternately and every time I get a blue screen.
AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!! I love you!! I have been messing with this stupid thing forever and could not get it to work. Im running an aging, lower-end Dell Dimension 3000 with a Pentium 4 HT 3.0GHz and (horrible) Intel Extreme Graphics 2. Driver max seemed to work okay, but the zipped file kept giving me errors. I had to use the non-zipped drivers (I’m glad that I happed to save both versions on my flash drive). I really wish that Dell had included at least an AGP slot for an upgrade, but I guess i should have forked out the extra $200 or so for the Dimension 4700. I was only 13 at the time and didn’t know what I was doing. After using remote desktop from my mom’s computer to run drivermax, everything is fine now. I had driver issues on my HP dv6700 laptop (Core 2 Duo T8100 2.1GHZ (Penryn), 3GB Ram, 500GB HDD), now I think I’m going to try this on it. Thanks a bunch for your sound advice!
I have having this same problem on my Gateway M275. I am a little confused with the editing of the ialmnt5.inf file. Should I be commenting out the dll files one at a time? And seeing if I don’t get the blue screen?
Yes Drivermax is amazingly good except for sometimes it will get ahead of itself and throw up some result that is pretty obviously a mistake. However their install process has such protections built in that it never damages your computer, even if the driver doesn’t work, you just roll it back. I don’t keep it running as I only use it at install and maybe once a year so download it then. I find it is by far the best driver scan, and free, but if it pleases you then flip them a donation so it will always be around! Be sure to set Vista compatibility to XPsp2 in .exe properties and run as adminstrator.

Help! I have a Dell 700m that uses the 855gm video card. I can’t get it to work with Windows 7. Everytime I restarted start with a black screen. I have it in dual boot with XP which work fine. I’m also having problems with the Wireless drivers.

I downloaded the XP SP2 driver from support.dell.com> I know the driver works on this machine for Vista. I then set it to run in Vista compatibility mode and run as Administrator for all users and it installed and runs normally in 1024X768 32 bit mode.

Disabling the Integrity Checks so that it will allow a non-digital signed driver makes all the difference! The driver I successfully used on Windows 7 was in a file called 855_Vista_Driver.zip
I was able to get wireless working on my 700m just using the most current XP driver from Dell (Dell TrueMobile 1400 is what is in my machine). The video is another matter – no luck getting the 855GM workarounds to work for me.
I used the driver that I downloaded from Justen’s site in his prior post of 1-14-09 (Thanks! Justen), but then to make it work on a Dell D400 laptop, I also had to make an entry on a DOS prompt while in safe mode that was provided by: tanstg at ant

Are you able to have hardware acceleration up at full? I have to reduce mine other wise it locks the system up, especially with live messenger.
There are posts saying that Intel 915GM works with full acceleration in the new build 7022 – no freezing, no major problems. If this is the case, 855GM chipset should aslo work with full acceleration, because 915GM systems freeze under build 7000. Hopefully this issue will be resolved in the final (RTM) version of Windows 7.
Hmm, I’ve been trying to increase hardware acceleration enough to enable direct3d but with no luck. I have no problem with things like You tube and such, but none of the screen savers work, and windows live messenger locks the system up completely with it enabled. This results in having to boot into safe mode to use msconfig and prevent live messenger from opening before reducing hardware acceleration again. It works ok with it reduced to the third notch. It’s the 855 chipset I’m using.
to hyte1, are you using the latest Windows 7 build? i have it but i am not installing it until i hear that some issues were resolved. i am curious about Windows 7 build 7022, i was wondering if anyone has been working with this build and how does it stack up against the beta build 7000?

I am currenlty running Windows 7 7000 as my main OS (I know i shouldnt) on a Samsung Q1-NP.
Windows 7 (7000) works better on the 900Mhz Cel than Vista or XP ever did has given my Q1 a 2nd life!! if only i can fix the hanging problems caused by the stupid Intel 915 drivers…
I don’t have anything with the 915 chipset, but I’ve installed Win 7 Build 7022 on my Inspiron 510m (Intel 855gm) and I can still only use default VGA – no improvement for me đź¦
Great news! After tolerating reduced hardware acceleration for WMP in Win7000 beta for weeks, I replaced it with Win7022 build and I can now play WMP with full hardware accel. I have 915gm chipset with latest .4764 driver dl from intel support. I also vlited this build down to 1.27g using only 208mb of ram at idle, so it runs great and is fully stable on my old HP 510 laptop with 528 ram. If u want to see what I took out, I posted my vlite log on Windows7 forum in support.
Jow – im using build 7000. I didn’t know there was a newer build, I might give that a go.

oh yeah i failed to ask i was wondering which way i should approach installing Win 7 Build7022 from Beta build 7000? Should i upgrade it or do a clean install? i do have files that i wish to keep. If i were to do a clean install like i did initially from XP (i ran the disc while i was booted in XP from a disc thus creating a “windows.old” folder), would this folder be created again so i still have the programs and stuff like that?
The 7022 buildof Win 7 actually fixes the video acceleration problem of build 7000. I’m using it now and I have to give MS a nahd for fixing it so soon. Maybe the final version might even support aero for Intel 915 drivers…who knows.
Interesting. I have an Inspiron 510m myself, and like vinf am finding I can’t get the drivers to work in build 7022. Note he’s using 7000 in those screenshots, I think that might be a key issue.
I played around in DriverMax (no joke in 640×480 – that program’s UI is terrible) to no avail whatsoever. It tries to update to the latest drivers, but tells me “Failed” and then “you need to restart”.
Basically at this point I’d say you need build 7000 to have proper video drivers for 855 right now.
Vinf, I don’t think you’d have had any problem hosting the drivers yourself – I run a fairly popular driverguide on my site and haven’t had a single complaint yet.
Hi. i was wondering if anyone has the very latest drivers for the intel 855GM mobile. my dell latitude D505 has Windows 7 Build 7022. i was not sure if anyone can post a hyperlink or something. i am also not sure if i do in face have the latest drivers. they are the 6.14.10.4656, and my adapter does say it its the Inter 82852/82855 GM/GME but then it is (Microsoft Corporation – XDDM). Obviously these can from Vista, but i was wondering if this is that latest driver supported. Thanks!

The audio drivers for Windows XP should be in the automatic updates. if not, then please refer to your laptop’s manufacturer website for help with audio drivers. any other OS like Windows Vista or Windows 7, those drivers will be updated through Microsoft update.
I’ve tried this method with the 7057 build to no avail with the 855gm chipset, bluescreens every time. Have tried removing the references to the dll’s as mentioned earlier with the same result. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Does anyone have an update on this? I’m still trying to get the 855 chipset working on Windows 7, no luck so far!! Maybe the RC’s will improve matters?
It works!!
For anyone still having trouble, all you need to do is download the 855/915 driver installation exe from your manufacturer’s website and install it in compatibility mode for XP. I got my Fujitsu P7010D running with full widescreen 1280×768 resolution in Windows 7, build 7077. Everything works great and videos play just fine.
Eric…1280×768 is the SVGA stock driver…not your xp driver….
I have installed Windows 7 on my Inspiron 510m with the 855gm_vista_driver.zip files without problems. What I did was:
1. Install Windows 7 while being connected to the internet (with a cable). This way a driver for the dell 1300 wlan card will be fetched automatically;
2. After the installation has completed, restart and go dive into the display adapter ‘update driver’ dialog until you get to the window with the ‘Have disk’ button. Click it and navigate to the folder where you previously unzipped the 855gm_vista_driver archive, and select the driver file. After this, close up and restart.
And go wonder, it runs like a mad cat.

Windows 7 RC is out in a few days time (5th to the general public), or today if you are a Technet subscriber.
Hopefully it will be fixed in that release.

Thanks for letting us know, I was going to download RC1 but I’ll leave it for now. It’s such a shame they havn’t created drivers for this chipset, the beta version was so rapid on my Dell D505. Looks like they are trying to stop people from using old hardware. Shame, I’ll stick with XP for the forseeable future then.
I have just done a clean install of Windows 7 RC onto my Dell Inspiron 510m with it’s Intel 855gm video card… still doesn’t work – defaults to default VGA out of the box 🦠such a shame… come in Intel – where are the drivers? and if not Intel, MS – come on, surely it’s in your interest to drive adoption – you have obviously done some excellent performance work on Windows 7 it runs far better on this 510m than Vista EVER did!
yeah, downloaded RC1 and installed the XP drivers and no luck. getting the standard default drivers on my VGN-T350P vaio. total FAIL.

I have a Dell 700m that I was able to get full resolution working last night with Windows 7 RC1. I tried several of the methods here with no success (bluescreens, blank screens, etc) but I was able to find the answer in the Sevenforums.com.
I’ll paste it:

It’s a little hard to read with all the abbreviations but basically just download the linked drivers, update the controllers, and turn off integrity checks. Worked good for me. I have not thoroughly tested video yet so I can’t comment on that but it at least gives you the true resolution.

I turned off the intergrity check and then installed the intel 855 driver from the rapidshare link above. i resart as stated and when it loads up again, windows installs the video driver but after saying install successful it is still the same default driver from windows. in device driver its still shows the intel 855 card installed but says there is a problem and is turned off..

yeah i have the same problem as tony, i also have a dell 700m. i would have a fresh install, turn integrity check off, go to device drivers, right click on standard display driver, browse to the downloaded 855 driver, and install, restart, but nothing. anyone have an issue with this too?
This worked perfectly on my Toshiba Satellite A15-S157 laptop with Windows 7 RC (build 7100). It has Intel 82852/82855 GM/GME onboard graphics (aka Intel Montara GML). Here’s what happened when I first installed Windows 7:
– The video card appeared in Device Manager as “Standard VGA”
– A second device appeared in Device Manager as “Video Controller” with the yellow exclamation mark
– I could set the resolution to 1024×768, 32-bit color (the screen’s native resolution)
– I could play a DivX/XviD video file, but it was extremely choppy and pixelated
– The “Sleep” option was unavailable in my power settings (only Hibernate or Shut Down)
I followed the instructions in the blog post above and imported the ZIP file linked from the 4th comment (downloaded from justendeal.com) into DriverMax. After a restart, everything is working great:
– Both entries in Device Manager appear as “Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller” with no exclamation mark
– I can play a DivX/XviD video file smoothly and in good quality
– The “Sleep” option is available in my power settings

One addendum to my post above. I discovered that using the Vista drivers, DivX/XviD videos play fine in Windows 7 RC (build 7100) but playing a DVD in Windows Media Player or Media Center gives me a blue screen with error STOP 0x0000007F. I copied some VOBs to my hard drive and got the same result when trying to play them, so the issue is unrelated to my DVD drive.
DVDs only play in WMP if I change my display settings to set video hardware acceleration low enough that Direct3D is disabled. But that’s equivalent to using the generic Standard VGA drivers and DivX/XviD playback is lousy.
My solution is to leave hardware acceleration at the highest setting but use VideoLAN’s VLC Media Player ( http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ ) to play back DVDs. VLC works fine for DVDs (no BSOD) and I can still use WMP normally for other media files.
Works perfectly on my HP Pavilion dv1000, but 3D acceleration doesn’t work: OpenGL and DirectX.
When I’m starting Quake 3 I get console warnings: “GLW_StartOpenGL() – could not load OpenGL subsystem”.
Add driver INTEL 945 (WDDM) and DirectX worked!
Now my laptop have a two drivers: INTEL 82855 (XDDM) and INTEL 945(WDDM) -> DirectX worked
With Lenovo X41 and 915 video, I found the following solution (will not enable Aero, but it works and I do not have video or other freezing everyone else complains about.)
Go to HP’s website and download SP34749 which is a 915 Vista 32-Bit driver. Download, expand then update driver. It will find it, and even correctly identified my flat panel display after a restart.

With FSC Lifebook T4010D and Intel 855 video, I found no solution. The driver from Vista installation, exported with DriverMax, brings BSOD after import and reboot.

On Dell Inspiron 1150 works extracting drivers from vista and using driver max. I dont know if i can run aero, but the driver installs and works great on win 7 7264

I have downloaded the RTM Code of Windows 7 ultimate and tried it on my Inspiron 510m (Intel 955gm chipset) and unfortunately still no change I’m afraid – no native video driver, basic VGA only
Shame as Win 7 performs brilliantly on this machine and would give it a new lease of life… if only Intel would release a video driver!!
Intel if you are reading, this article gets on average 400 hits/day and Windows 7 isn’t even available to most people yet… there is /significant/ demand for it, even if it can’t do the fancy Aero stuff – basic driver, with native LCD resolution would be just fine
It wouldn’t be able to do Aero, the hardware flat out lacks the necessary features. That said, some people here HAVE managed to get the basic features working, which makes me think the problem is something technically minor.
(All it takes to get nvidia drivers working in XP on a recent laptop, for example, is a few small changes to the inf text file.)
We need one knowledgeable person – either from Intel or someone who knows a lot about tweaking Intel drivers – to have a short go at getting it to work for everyone. Any takers?

Make that 401 per day. Toshiba Satellite R10 Tablet with that wonderful Intel 852GM. Works ok, but where I had two displays before, I now have one. I won’t hold my breath.

run command prompt as admin
type Bcdedit.exe /set nointegritychecks ON
then reboot in safe mode
go to computer managment
then go to devices
then display adaptors
then update the adaptors using these files

turn on high 32 bit color under advanced
make sure resolution is at 1280 x 800
Now you have full resolution AND sleep functions

You know, it has almost been a year now since I have tried this the first time, I actually went through every single method available. Finally I found the combination that could bring down my Latitude D505 with 855gm chipset:

“The 0x7E STOP blue screen is occuring due to the new boot animation in Win7 which runs at 1024×768 and the crash occurs when the resolution changes at the end of that (since the driver was written when no resolution change occurred then). Strangely it only crashes if an external monitor isn’t attached. So if you avoid the new boot animation that forces the old boot VGA resolution (640×480) that the driver can handle, and the blue screen doesn’t occur. That can be achieved by running msconfig and checking Boot->OS boot information. Instead of the animation you now get text showing driver loads and the 0x7E STOP blue screen is avoided. And now you don’t need an external monitor connected each time you reboot.”
Then this:
“For some reason the “bcdedit.exe -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS” command seems a bit unreliable. drivers worked great exept one problem – i cant select any of widescreen resolutions. there are 1024×768 or 1280×1024 but no 1280×800.
I was so close – now i can even play games and watch movies – but only in standart mode 4:3
Hi, this is a pretty tricky one, I had the same problem using the intel 855gm. the problem lies with the graphics chipset driver and is an easy fix. you should prob try stay connected to the net while doing this.
First open “Device Manager” and insert your driver disk. (it didnt seem to work when it was on the harddrive) Under display adapters right click on to the VGA driver and then “Update Driver Software” then click on “Browse my computer for driver software” pick your drive letter where the driver is and press next.
It will install the driver and wont display the vga driver in device manager, but will not work as it has a conflict so restart.
Go back into “Device Manager” and uninstall the driver(s) under “Display Adapters”. Now right click on any text and click “scan for hardware changes”, the point of this is to now let windows automatically find drivers.
It will say it needs to restart for the device to be working(do not restart), but go back to Device Manager and a couple of Unknown devices will be found Under “Other” right click on them and click onto “Update Driver Software”. It should say its installed graphic controllers and maybe some other stuff. now restart. resolution will be already set.

Ago after this driver, I received blue screen. Solution: run-> msconfig-> boot-> check OS boot information . After this check WINDOWS 7 work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with VIDEO acselerator.

The only solution that worked for me was to install drivermax on Vista and Win 7, create backup from Vista, run Drivermax on Win 7, and restore drivers from the Vista backup. Finally received no problems with starting Intel 855 on reboot to Win 7.
Our Pavilion 4933 has triple boot to XP, Vists, and Win7 RC for OS support purposes. Now all drivers load properly in Win7.

Thank you for the driver! for those having issues with WMP.. I had some too.. I couldn’t play any videos full screen and a lot of formats just refused to load. Using Media player classic – home cinema fixed all these problems, and with FFDshow and haali media splitter I’m now playing 1080p/720p from my dimension 1100.

The sleep and wakeup problem is common for some people. There might be a bios setting or if you use boot loader/bios hack for Windows 7 there might be a problem.
The sleep/wakeup works fine on my Medion Akoya EX with the same drivers running Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit RTM without any bootloaders or bios patches. I would try sleep/wakeup on a clean install first (WITHOUT any bootloaders/bios patches etc).
You are my hero. With your video files, I am able to make my Inspiron 710m working like a charm!!!

There is demand for a “real”/supported driver, even if it only allows full screen res and no aero/clever 3D graphics – I’ve got 3 x laptops with Intel 855 chips which would be given a new lease of life with Win7 but no proper driver support.
Maybe you should all be logging calls with MS & Intel support requesting them “officially” – that will certainally flag it up on their offical radar

umm, did you read the post & comments? there are no real ones – just some hacky ways to make it work – not pretty
The ultimate solution for us civilians who hesitate to edit restricted system files would be a driver version that trumps the Windows 7 default driver during the standard driver update process. Is it just a matter of changing a date in the driver to be more recent than the standard driver with the same version number? My 700m is still waiting. And yes, I have bought my last Dell computer, given their abandonment of loyal customers.
1. Have your driver on a disk(downloaded/not downloaded)

3. After install Restart immediately.
4. Go back into “Device Manager” and uninstall the driver(s) under “Display Adapters”.

Hang on a sec. I done another fresh install and relized it eventually installed the video driver by itself after 4 or so restarts (while connected to internet)
Try putting a shortcut to “Device Manager” and first UNINSTALL the conflicted driver(s). (I think I uninstalled mine 2 times between restarts).
wait a while until the page in “Device Manager” stops refreshing so it can be restarted and try again.
mine came up it failed to install driver a few times and then after a restart it installed perfectly.
you could have just updated the video driver, go to Device maner, right click the video device and then choose update driver, then choose ” Let me Choose from the Device” -something that says like that, and then click on the view all devices–of course navigate through video, and then look for intel, you should be able to see there 855GM family, choose that one and install it, restart the system and you will have he resolution supported by the video card and working icons and settings for the video software, problem is…mine didnt support AERO–w2hat ashame… ^^<

I have an old HP/Compaq NX5000 which uses an Intel 855 graphics chipset. I am currently running build 7100 of the Windows 7 release candidate
The drivermax solution works well for normal office use (word processing) but causes the computer to blue-screen when a DVD is played
The Lexxion solution works as well and allows DVD’s to play no problem. This solution generates heaps of errors when installing however you simply reboot the computer, log in, and reboot again it it installs flawlessly.
I highly reccomend the lexxion solution at the address which others have already published but which I will repeat

I found a pretty easy fix to get windows 7 video working on my 855gm equipped Dell 700m.
This one involves taking ownership of the vgapnp.sys file and breaking it to force the install and use of the Intel Driver. Warning: Once the install is complete and working, I didn’t do all the stuff this guy said, I just restored a copy of the original file- the first time i tried it it broke the system boot on classpnp.sys (as did many others it seems) because I did not restore the vgapnp.sys file permissions correctly.
I used your zip-file for Dell 505, and it works now via 1024Ă—768,!

Bought a new HP Desktop (Intel Core i3-530) and my existing Envision EN9110 monitor goes blank when I boot up. I have to turn desktop on/on about 12 times for the password screen to appear. Any suggestions?
Driver Max works! It found a chipset called the Intel corporation 855 Magicone embedded Gcontrol and downloaded a driver written by Microsoft that is so compatible it is not funny!Screen resolution is 1280X800, full direct X 3D accelleration, full hardware accelleration, no issue with DVD/Divx and stable as heck. This is on a Dell 710m laptop. I did log in as the admin and turned off driver signing monitering. 3 days I looked and tried with BSOD, blank screens etc and then tried driver max it works like a champ. This driver is not digitaly signed but is supposed to work for the entire Intel Extreme Graphics 2 family.

I have a Dell 710m and I spent 2 days looking for a solution for the video driver issue.
Solution: DriverMax, I installed Windows 7, installed DriverMax and it found current Intel drivers for me, installed and rebooted, works fine, I’m using the native resolution on my laptop. Haven’t tried an external monitor yet.
I did not use a Vista driver or an XP driver. DriverMax went out and found an updated driver for it and for other hardware as well, been up and running all day, with no problems.
DVD’s, work fine, you just CAN’T run a DVD in full screen, they must remain in a window. In full screen they will freeze, in a window I haven’t noticed any frames freeze so far.

did you try to turn down the DirectX controls in the Advanced Settings in the Screen resolution control panel? I found that if you use VLC media player to play any video media, and you go into the Troubleshoot tab in that advanced settings (and then click on Change Settings), turn to the third setting from the left side of the slider, then i think you will be able to run a DVD or video file in full screen.

Uninstall all video drivers and replace with above. Works quite nicely.

Instructions
STEP 1
Make sure you unistall video drivers that do not work. If you see exclamation marks on your previous drivers in Device Manager, unistall them. Your Device Manager should say that you have Standard VGA Driver installed under Display category and exclamation mark on “video controller”. Make sure you restart PC when asked.
STEP 2
We will need to edit “c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys” file now, but there is a problem. Windows Vista and Windows 7 will NOT allow you to edit system files even when you are the admin. Changing security attributes of that file did not work either. The file is owned by “TrustedInstaller” service. We will need to own the file and give ourselves the full control to edit it.
Click ‘Start’ and in ‘Search’ type ‘cmd’. The result will show on top. Right-click on ‘cmd’ and choose “Run as Administrator”. If your account does not have admin rights you might be prompted to enter username and password. I used account that already has administrator priviledges. You should have a command prompt with administrator priviledges.
STEP 3
Lets say my logged in username is peter
First command you do is:
takeown /f c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys
This will give ownship to the current user. You should see a message saying SUCCESS etc..
Second command you do is:
cacls c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys /G peter:F
There will be a confirmation message so type ‘y’. This will change the security attributes to give you ONLY all the permissions for the file. If you are paranoid as me and want original permissions restored, I will show you how to restore the permissions to the previous step later on in this tutorial . If ‘cacls’ command does not work you can try using ‘icacls’. If you cannot edit this file try to boot to “Save Mode” and try it again (Thx to Giuseppe Chill).
STEP 4
Open c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys in any text editor. Just add any character to the begining of the text. Let’s say we will add character x . So the text should start with xMZ and the rest of stuff. Save the file. This edit will render that file unusable.
STEP 5
In Device Manager uninstall Standard VGA Adapter. It will prompt you to restart so do it. After install you will see a message saying that certain devices did NOT installed successfuly, which is GOOD . Go to Device Manager and you should see the exclamation point next to “video controller” and “video controller (vga compatible)”. Right-click on “video controller (vga compatible)” and do update driver. Choose “Browse for the Driver” (or something like it ). Point to the driver directory that you downloaded and extracted (win2000). Click “OK”. Wait for the driver to be installed. It might hang for a little (It will say that window is “not responding”). Do not worry as this is still installing the driver. It will prompt you to restart so do it. (If it does not prompt click anywhere and wait for message). After restart it will finish installing the driver.
Congratulations!!! You should have a working video driver!!!
STEP 6
Open c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys in any text editor. Remove the first character you put there which was x. Save the file. Your file will be usuable again . You can stop here if you want, but if you want to restore the permissions for the file to original state go to next step.
STEP 7
Right-click on any other file in the c:\windows\system32\drivers. Choose “Properties”. Go to “Security” tab. Now compare that security tab with the security tab of c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys. Just make sure the security tabs of those two files look the same (all tabs and advanced options). In order to add “TrustedInstaller” it is not the same as regular usernames because it is a service.
You will need to type “NT SERVICE\TrustedInstaller” (without quotes) when adding it to own the file and to have all permissions. Once you done editing you can delete your account from c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys, because it was not there from the beginning. We took control over and the previous commands added it by default.

Problem Solved! Solution is quit simple (I installed Windows 7 on a Dell latitude D505).
1. Download the latest Intel Extreme Graphics 855 GM from Dell.com at
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/DriverDetails/DriverFileFormats?DriverId=X5YDH&FileId=2731091111 and unzip it.
2. Go to the unzipped driver folder, right click the Setup.exe file and select Properties.
3. Select Compatibility Tab and choose “Windows XP SP3 as compatibility mode.
4. Apply changes, run the setup.exe file – ignore all Windows 7 messages – restart the computer and that is – you have a higher screen resolution.

Try this :-
1. Download and extract the following drivers to your laptop:

2.Open a command prompt as administrator. (Click start > type â€cmd’ > right-click on cmd under programs> select â€Run as administrator’ > agree to any/all messages)
3. Copy and paste the following into the command prompt: takeown /f c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys
You will get a SUCCESS message in return.
4.Copy and paste the following into the command prompt (replace â€Elias’ with your username): cacls c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys /G Elias:F
Type â€y’ to confirm.
5.Open the following file in notepad: c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys
Type â€a’ to the beginning of this document.
Save and close.
6.Open your device manager (Press the windows key + r > type â€devmgmt.msc’ > click OK)
Uninstall â€Standard VGA Adapter’ under â€Display adapters’ (Expand â€Display adapters’ > right-click on â€Standard VGA Adapter’ > select â€Uninstall’)
Restart laptop
7.After restarting you will see an error message. This is desired and normal.
Open your device manager (Press the windows key + r > type â€devmgmt.msc’ > click OK)
Under â€Other devices, find â€video controller (vga compatible)’. Right-click on it and select â€Update Driver Software’.
Click on â€Browse my computer for driver software’.
Click â€Browse…’ and select the â€Win2000′ folder within the extracted driver files you downloaded above. Click OK.
If your screen goes black, wait a few minutes and then press the enter key several times.
The laptop should restart.
8.Open the following file in notepad: c:\windows\system32\drivers\vgapnp.sys
Delete the â€a’ you added earlier.
Save and close.
9.Enjoy Windows 7 at full resolution.

sd99’s simple method DID WORK to get the Intel 852 XP video driver to work under Windows 7 on my Gateway 3522GZ laptop.
I used a slightly different driver, version 6.14.10.3889. It will probably work with any Intel 852 version 6.14 driver.
– Unzip the driver package
